My PC is a piece of crap, and that's putting it nicely. I don't even want to benchmark it, that would just be too depressing.

Nice PC tommy, but your CPU Will be a big bottleneck in your system when you receive your 8800GT, before i used to have an AMD 4000+ single core cpu, and it bottlenecked my x1950xtx wich is considerably slower then a 8800GT. Tip is to upgrade into a an AMD athlon X2 cpu.
Lol sparky xD |

yea you could, or just upgrade to an X2 meanwhile, as theyre really cheap now when Phenom comes. i'd say a 4200+ X2 is enough, and with the right cpu cooler its just fine. if u want alittle faster cpu i reccomend 5000+ black edition or 6000+. u dont wanna sit with a bottlenecked system for 6+ months ;P |

Yeah if he's getting an 8800 I'd definitely recommend at least a 5000+. Ideally you don't want your CPU to be the limiting reactant though, so It'd probably be better to go all out on the CPU.

well i wont have a single damn cent of cash when i get the card... but being bottlenecked with a 8800GT is much better than being not bottle necked with a 7600GS anyway. it just can't be worse.

it will not feel like a huge improvement as your gpu will be very limited by the cpu, and it will prolly feel like you've payed alot of money for nothing. thats how i felt when i had a bottlenecking cpu. i'd suggest you do this instead; Buy a amd 5000+ black edition and a radeon hd3850 256mb, and upgrade to 8800 series in the summertime when you have cash. the hd3850 beats all geforce 8600 series with ease, and is even cheaper then the 8600 series, to confirm that read This review. i mean just check it out, 3D Mark 06 score at 1280x1024 Sapphire Radeon HD3850: 8773 3d marks Foxconn Geforce 8600GTS Overklocked edition: 5897 3d marks eVGA Geforce 8800GTS 640mb: 9088 3d marks i think that says enough, this almost beats an 8800 for a Much more affordable price, its cheaper then a 8600gts and better. go for the AMD Spider platform all the way (AMD CPU, ATI GPU, AMD motherboard) Nice pc panther, it should beat mine in 3d mark ;) but lo and behold, im upgrading to a radeon HD3870 x turbo after christmas + a thermalright 120 extreme cpu cooler, meaning i should be able to reach 4ghz on my cpu then ill be satisfied for another 6 months or so with my pc ;P

yes well, the 1950series is weak, 2900 series is extremly power hungry and 3000 series is where they've finally got it right, still not faster then nvidia but not far away, requiers about half the power of the 2900 series and most interesting is that they have a Much more affordable price then nvidia

260ˆ is the maximum amount of cash i can use right now. and i wont get a 500+ black edition with a 3850 for that. and on the summer when i'll have chash. i've already lost ~200ˆ cos of the 3850 i bought. so i'll stick with my plans. because if i do that, i'll not have a too good computer untill summer. but when it's summer, my computer would be better than it would be if i'd do what you said.

NVidia just came out with a new very powerful, yet somewhat affordable 8800 model, here:
link Looks to be immensely powerful for sure. Doesn't look like it supports DX10.1, only DX10. I don't how important that is though. |

that is the model after the GT, and he could barely afford the GT. there is a 256mb verison of the 8800gt costing about the same as hd3870, still hd3850 is alot cheaper

Well I think the GTS is taking the place of the GT basically, which means the 512MB GT should drop considerably in price soon. Maybe if he can wait until after Christmas that would help.

its not taking the place of the gt, its taking the place of the previous 8800gts 320/640mb. so the GT is most likely not gonna drop in price, maybe slightly. |

Well I'm not sure what the exchange rate for euros to dollars right now is, but it can't be good. So I'm guessing that those gfx cards are still gonna be out of my price range for the mere 6 months or so of use I'd get out of it before I get a new computer.

That's one thing that really bugs me about my computer. My monitor sucks. no 18 inch LCD here, I got the cheapest () CRT I could find from Best Buy, it only supports 1024x768, so that blows. But oh well, it didn't really seem worth it to buy an expensive LCD at the time. In retrospect it may have been a good idea. I can't stand any CRTs that operates at less than 85 Hz too, which is why I don't run at 1280x1024. I can see the monitor blinking at 60Hz, and it makes me start vomiting after about half an hour. I bet nobody really wanted to know that.
